Washington, DC - On Tax Day, National Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) President Patrick Yoes today lauded new Federal tax policies that reduce income taxes on tips, overtime pay, and Social Security benefits—delivering meaningful relief to the men and women who serve and protect our communities every day.
“As tax season draws to a close, law enforcement officers across the nation are seeing smaller tax bills and more money in their pocket,” said Yoes. “The elimination of Federal income taxes on certain overtime hours especially is a game-changer for our members, who work long hours and unpredictable shifts to keep our streets safe. They deserve to keep every hard-earned dollar they make protecting the public.”
Police officers routinely log overtime to respond to emergencies, fill staffing shortages, and maintain public safety around the clock. Under the new law, not all overtime pay is subject to Federal income tax, which should result in significant increases to the bottom lines of these officers and their families. Additional tax breaks on Social Security and tips are also making a different to Americans across the board in many professions.
“These changes to the tax code recognize the sacrifices our officers make every single day. No more taxing the extra hours they work. No more taxing the benefits they earned after a lifetime of service. This is real, tangible support for the brave men and women who run toward danger while others run away, Yoes said. “Our officers will take home more pay to provide for their families, pay down debt, and invest in their futures. The FOP fought hard for these changes, and we are proud to see them delivering results on Tax Day.”
“To every law enforcement officer filing their taxes today—thank you for your service. Your FOP is committed to working with President Trump to advance policies that recognize and support your work, as he did by eliminating certain taxes on our overtime.”
