Dear Mr. President-elect,
I am writing on behalf of the members of the Fraternal Order of Police to offer you our sincerest appreciation for your timely endorsement of the “Social Security Fairness Act.”
Executive Director Jim Pasco and I met with you at your home in Mar-a-Lago on 16 December and asked for your support, which you readily gave. Your public support for this legislation helped win the support of a majority of Senate Republicans, which resulted in a lopsided 76-20 victory on the floor of the United States Senate. We do not believe this effort would have succeeded without your intervention in the days before this vote was held. A small number of Senators were determined to use every parliamentary procedure to stall this measure long enough to kill it. You provided the momentum we needed to get over the finish line, and we owe you a debt of gratitude.
Because of your support, nearly three million law enforcement officers, fire fighters, and other public employees who earned themselves a Social Security benefit, only to see those benefits reduced by the Windfall Elimination Provision, will finally begin to receive every penny that they earned. Because of your support, families impacted by the Government Pension Offset which reduced or, in most cases, eliminated the survivor’s benefit received by surviving spouses, will finally be able to collect what they are owed.
On behalf of the more than 377,000 members of the Fraternal Order of Police, as well as every individual and family that will benefit from the passage of the “Social Security Fairness Act,” thank you. We look forward to your inauguration and resuming our partnership with your new Administration. Should you need anything from us, please do not hesitate to contact me or Executive Director Jim Pasco in our Washington, D.C. office.
Sincerely,
Patrick Yoes
National President
