Dear Senator Cornyn,
I am writing on behalf of the members of the Fraternal Order of Police to advise you of our support for S. 3675, the “ICE Protection Act.”
Federal law enforcement officers perform a critical role in protecting public safety and maintaining the rule of law. Unfortunately, within the past year, this work has become increasingly dangerous for these brave men and women, especially those who work for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). ICE officers, who work to enforce our nation’s immigration laws, have seen numerous incidents where they have been assaulted and gravely injured. These kinds of actions are a direct attack on the criminal justice system and those who are sworn to protect our communities.
Your bill would double the penalties for assaulting a Federal law enforcement officer with a weapon as well as add mandatory minimum sentences for using a vehicle to assault an officer. These additional penalties would send a clear message that attempting to injure or kill a Federal law enforcement officer will be met with severe consequences.
On behalf of the more than 382,000 members of the Fraternal Order of Police, I thank you for your leadership on this issue. If I can be of any help or provide additional information in support of this proposal, please do not hesitate to contact me or Executive Director Jim Pasco in our Washington, D.C. office.
Sincerely,
Patrick Yoes
National President
