Dear General Bondi,
I am writing on behalf of the members of the Fraternal Order of Police to ask for your help in the case of the cold-blooded murder of Chicago Police Officer Clifton Lewis.
In 2011, Officer Lewis was working a side job at a liquor store on the city’s West Side to save up money for his upcoming wedding. Lewis had recently proposed to his girlfriend, whom he had met while working on the job. The two were deeply in love.
During his shift, two armed Spanish Cobra gang members entered, intent on robbing the store while a third members waited outside. Officer Lewis announced himself and the two men brandished their weapons and shot him. Officer Lewis managed to fire back but missed. One of the Spanish Cobras climbed over the store counter and shot Lewis execution style. A long investigation by detectives and prosecutors followed and the three gang members were indicted.
Two were convicted and one was awaiting trial before an all too familiar travesty took place. Relying on bogus media reports alleging misconduct by police and prosecutors, Kimberly Foxx, one of the worst rogue prosecutors in the nation, dropped the charges, shocking prosecutors and police alike.
Those of us in law enforcement were hopeful that the newly elected Cook County State’s Attorney, Eileen O’Neil Burke, would recharge and try the men for the murder, but she has declined to do so.
I am writing to you today to ask if Federal prosecutors would be able to take up the case and restore a semblance of justice in Chicago, particularly relating to cases in which police officers have been murdered. We can provide you with all the information about the case and the key people involved.
The murder of police officer Clifton Lewis by gang members, caught on videotape, cannot be ignored by the justice system. We therefore respectfully request your assistance and any advice you can provide in getting justice for Officer Lewis and his family.
I thank you in advance for looking into this matter. As always, we are deeply grateful to have you as our Attorney General and appreciate your leadership. Please feel free to contact me Executive Director Jim Pasco in our Washington, D.C. office if we can be of any additional assistance in this matter.
Sincerely,
Patrick Yoes
National President
