Dear Senator Sinema,
I am writing on behalf of the members of the Fraternal Order of Police to offer you our sincerest appreciation for all your hard work and engagement on the floor of the Senate as it debated H.R. 82, the “Social Security Fairness Act.”
Without your steady leadership and constant presence on the floor, we may not have gotten this legislation to a final vote. You filled a critical role by providing constant contact and assurance with those Members of the Senate who supported the bill, while reaching out to other offices to grow our support. You were the one who executed the legislative strategy of the bill’s sponsors and Senate leadership. We are extremely proud of the work we did together over the course of two weeks in December and deeply grateful to you seeing it through to the end.
Because of your work, nearly three million law enforcement officers, fire fighters, and other public employees who earned themselves a Social Security benefit, only to see those benefits reduced by the Windfall Elimination Provision, will finally begin to receive every penny that they earned. Because of your work, families impacted by the Government Pension Offset which reduced or, in most cases, eliminated the survivor’s benefit received by surviving spouses, will finally be able to collect what they are owed.
On behalf of the more than 377,000 members of the Fraternal Order of Police, as well as every individual and family that will benefit from the passage of the “Social Security Fairness Act,” thank you. If we can be of any assistance to you after your departure from the Senate, please do not hesitate to contact me or Executive Director Jim Pasco in our Washington, D.C. office.
Sincerely,
Patrick Yoes
National President
