Dear Representatives McDonald Rivet and Fitzpatrick,
I am writing on behalf of the members of the Fraternal Order of Police to advise you of our support for H.R. 5594, the “Protect Your Pin Act.”
In 2023, American adults lost an estimated $43 billion to identity fraud. With the rapid advancement of technology, law enforcement needs additional resources to protect people and their paychecks. The “Protect Your PIN Act” would expand guidelines to allow local law enforcement agencies to use grant funding from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Local Law Enforcement Grants for Enforcement of Cybercrimes program to combat identity theft.
Identity theft is also a tool used by domestic abusers who use financial control of their victims to trap them into fearful dependence. By expanding the eligible uses of this critical grant program, law enforcement will have the tools needed to end these cycles of abuse, to protect victims, and to hold offenders accountable.
On behalf of the more than 382,000 members of the Fraternal Order of Police, I thank you both for your leadership on this important issue. If I can provide any additional information about this bill, please do not hesitate to contact me or Executive Director Jim Pasco in our Washington, D.C. office.
Sincerely,
Patrick Yoes
National President
