Dear Representative Davis,
I am writing on behalf of the Fraternal Order of Police to advise you of our support for H.R. 4810, the “Opioid Prescription Verification Act.”
Our nation continues to experience an epidemic of opioid-related deaths, with these overdoses claiming the lives of more than 130 people every day. With drugs now killing more Americans per year than firearms and car crashes, it is vital that we provide the tools needed to assist law enforcement in their efforts to stem the tide of opioid-related deaths in our communities.
Your bill will require retail sellers of opioids to verify the identity of the prospective purchaser and will require them to enter certain information about the purchase into the State’s prescription drug monitoring system. This tool would be extremely helpful to law enforcement in their efforts to stop the bad actors who continue to push these deadly drugs on the streets of our communities.
On behalf of the more than 350,000 members of the Fraternal Order of Police, I am proud to offer our support for this legislation. If I can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me or my Executive Director, Jim Pasco, in my Washington office.
Sincerely,
Patrick Yoes
National President
