Washington, DC - Patrick Yoes, National President of the Fraternal Order of Police, celebrated that H.R. 82, the “Social Security Fairness Act,” passed the U.S. House of Representatives on a lopsided 327-75 vote.
“For 40 years, millions of public servants have seen their benefits stolen by a grossly unfair system. Now that the ‘Social Security Fairness Act’ has passed the House, we are one step closer to fully repealing the Windfall Elimination Provision and Government Pension Offset. Make no mistake, this is a remarkable occasion,” Yoes said. “I want to thank the bill’s sponsors, Representatives Garret N. Graves (R-LA) and Abigail D. Spanberger (D-VA), for their tremendous leadership and efforts which led to tonight’s victory. Their help and dedication every step of the way was invaluable.”
Yoes also commended FOP members in every State and region of the country for their outreach to their elected Representatives, saying that their work was critical to today’s success.
“This was a powerful demonstration of the power of the FOP’s grassroots,” said Yoes. “I thank all of our members who made a call, sent a letter or email, or spoke directly with their Representative to advocate for this bill. Your work was incredibly important and ultimately made a big impact.”
“Now it will just be a question of timing,” Yoes said. “This is an incredible, even historic achievement, but we still have a difficult path ahead. With precious few legislative days left, we need to get time on the Senate floor. Even though the Senate bill has 60 cosponsors, our experience in the House shows us that having cosponsors on a bill does not guarantee floor action. In the spring, Senate Majority Leader Schumer promised me that should the bill pass the House, he would get it to the floor. I hope he can deliver on this commitment, and he can count on the support of 377,000 FOP members.”
