Dear Senators Thune, Schumer, Chairman Grassley, and Senator Durbin,
I am writing on behalf of the members of the Fraternal Order of Police to urge the Senate to take up and pass a set of bills important to law enforcement that were passed by the House by voice vote under a suspension of the rules. The four bills are:
- R. 309, the “National Law Enforcement Officers Remembrance, Support, and Community Outreach Act,” which would authorize Federal funding to support the National Law Enforcement Museum and expand programs honoring law enforcement officers;
- R. 1266, the “Combating Illicit Xylazine Act,” which would direct Federal agencies to assess the trafficking and misuse of illicit xylazine and report to Congress on its prevalence, sources, and diversion;
- R. 7834, the “Safe Cloud Storage Act,” which would establish liability protections and security requirements for cloud-storage providers that contract with law enforcement agencies to store and process child sexual abuse material as evidence in investigations; and
- R. 8481, the “Kayleigh’s Law Act,” which would close gaps in Federal law by ensuring that victims of violent crime and sexual assault have lifetime protections against their abuser.
We respectfully request that the Senate consider these measures to honor and support the men and women who serve in law enforcement, address the trafficking and misuse of illicit xylazine, strengthen the secure handling of critical evidence in child sexual abuse investigations, and close gaps in Federal law to provide lasting protections for victims of violent crime and sexual assault.
On behalf of the more than 382,000 members of the Fraternal Order of Police, I urge you to take up and pass these bills, and thank you for considering our request. If I can be of any help or provide additional information in support of these pieces of legislation, please do not hesitate to contact me or Executive Director Jim Pasco in our Washington, D.C. office.
Sincerely,
Patrick Yoes
National President
