Dear Sheriff Brown,
I am writing on behalf of the membership of the Fraternal Order of Police to advise you of our support for the Safe Surfin' Foundation and the important work it is doing to help protect children on the Internet.
The Internet presents children with a wonderful opportunity to expand their knowledge and communicate with millions across the globe. However, the World Wide Web also contains many threats to the safety and the innocence of our children. There are 77 million children and teens today who will visit more than 40,000 chat rooms which are frequented by child predators actively looking for their next victim. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) recently stated that there is a "100 percent chance" that a child will meet a predator in a chat room. The threats posed by unfettered usage of the Internet by our children are substantial and frightening.
The Fraternal Order of Police wholeheartedly endorses the mission of the Safe Surfin' Foundation to educate parents, teachers, police officers, and librarians about the threats to our children on the Internet. The Foundation helps provide the resources and knowledge to these people to ensure that when our children surf the Internet, it is fun and rewarding, not an opportunity for a predator to take advantage of another victim.
On behalf of the 325,000 members of the Fraternal Order of Police, I want to thank you and the staff of the Bedford County Sheriff Office's Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force for launching the Safe Surfin' Foundation. It has done an excellent job educating children and parents to be more careful and thus less likely to be targeted by Internet predators, and I am proud to support its mission. Please do not hesitate to contact me, or Executive Director Jim Pasco, through our Washington office if I can be of any further assistance.
